Have Some Lain
0The video media embed plugin I use has come a long way. Not that I use it much or anything but still I’m impressed. Now if only I had some actually interesting content to publish.
Moving Yet Again
Moving house today. Fun and excitement for everyone involved. Today will be boxes and what furniture we ourselves can move. Tuesday removal guys will do the heavy stuff. As I said on facebook I hope the phone line and internet come up quickly so I can quit using my phones connection.
Once my rooms set up and people calm down I’ll take some photos of the new place. I Really should make more use of this site.
Update: Phone is active. ADSL may be active but I have my doubts.
Update #2:Adam Internet botched the ADSL relocation. Order should go in today though so all good.
Update #3:Internet went on the same day as update #2 funnily enough. Been playing around with my new router. Will add a new post when I’ve got nothing else to do.
Dr. Strangelove or How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love Firefox 4
I was having some issues with Adobe Flash player and Youtube so I decided it was a good idea to upgrade to FF4. At first the upgrade was a terrible idea and I spent an hour trying to get the install as much like FF3 as possible. Status-4-Evar helped a bit but I was still having teething issues. Disheartened I installed Google Chrome and played around with it with various addons. Keepass integration is my main concern with browsers followed by having a sidebar for my bookmarks and history. There is a plugin for Chrome but it had the most annoying habit of asking every single time if such and such a website is allowed to access the details in the Keepass database.
Chrome was quickly uninstalled and I tried to revert back to FF3 but again had Keepass issues. The Firefox plugin Keefox would refuse to correctly install so I completely removed all traces of FF and rebooted. FF4 was reinstalled and with a clean slate I added the bare minimum of plugins. The latest Keefox beta worked as expected, Status-4-Evar solved my need for a status bar that isn’t terrible, Forecastfox provides my weather information and Adblock is an essential.
Everything turned out better than expected. Sadly though much like Valve’s Steam the Mozilla guys have a nasty habit of introducing new wiz bang features and removing the old ones. The next major version of Firefox is going to have me going through all this stress again. Stop ruining things please!
Rant: Bad At Bad Company Part #2
Recon: Recon is the class I most love to hate. While Recons can be just as effective in combat as everyone else and they have tools to do the job, I often find player chose not to actively involve themselves in combat. You’ll often find every single last Recon sitting on a hill somewhere trying for long range head shots. Yes the Recon has sniper rifles and yes the Recon also has a Mortar strike ability but that does not mean your entire purpose is to sit back and kill some random enemy every 5 minutes. Get out there and help the team. Despite what you may think you can and should use your sniper rifle in close range combat. Take a shot and if you miss the head shot finish the enemy off with your pistol.

Rant: Bad At Bad Company Part #1
In this series of posts I will be detailing some of the common things I continually see every time I play Battlefield Bad Company 2. What do I mean by that? I mean the continuous amounts of failure that simply boggles my mind. This isn’t your regular Battlefield game it’s been simplified for the console crowd, it is after all the sequel to Bad Company 1 which is only available on PS3/Xbox.
Feeling Ducky?
I’ve started using Duck Duck Go as my search engine instead of Google. Duck Duck Go offers a clean interface with some simple configuration options and protects your privacy when you search. Want to search via SSL? With Duck Duck Go you can. Give it a go and see what you think.
My 21st Food Related Event
Some may have heard about what is planned for my upcoming birthday. There will be some kind of Chinese banquette of sorts happening of which details I will be able to provide later. Food will be paid for, people should only have to think about any drinks they’d like and drinks they’d like to buy me. Location is somewhere around Ingle Farm if I recall correctly or around that general area so transit shouldn’t be an issue for anyone. This post is simply an early one to let people know ahead of time (Way ahead of time my birthday is in May). More details as they become available.
Update: I have the name and location of the restaurant at last. Get in touch via MSN or Astra for those details.
Independence, Satire and Press Freedom
The Chaser’s Julian Morrow delivers his take on press freedom, censorship and media ownership at the annual Andrew Olle lecture.
A particularly memorable instance of this was when we found ourselves in the unique position of having a publishing deadline for a comedy newspaper on September 11, 2001. We watched the planes hitting the World Trade Centre just a few hours before the print deadline for the next edition. It was a strange night, but one that typified the way we’ve taken the old adage “tragedy plus time equals comedy” and turned it into a less universal dictum – “tragedy minus time equals Chaser”. “Centrepoint jumps two in world’s tallest building” still stands out as an all-time favourite headline of mine. But it, like many jokes I’ve been associated with, offended and appalled many.
You can read Julian’s entire speech here or watch the event on iView here (6 Days remaining as of 16/11/2009).
