Goes Nowhere, Does Nothing
My Video Card Died
This morning my Galaxy Geforce 8800GT decided to die. The game I was playing at the time froze as the driver tried to restart a few times before it failed and the machine turned off. The card itself was incredibly hot to the touch, I let it cool down before doing anything. My case has no speaker so I had to go find one and plug that in to get one long beep and two short beeps. Looking through the trouble shooting section of my motherboards manual I discovered that one long beep and two short beeps means graphic card/monitor error. Right now of I’m pretty buggered I can’t even remotely access any of my data because I reset the CMOS at some stage and my Raid isn’t set to boot so nothing happens.
There is only one other PCI-E video card in the house and that belongs to Jame’s. I’ll borrow that from him when he gets home to get my machine to at least boot and work from this laptop I’m on right now to get things done.
Update: Situation has changed, see comments.

You're the second person I know to have their graphics card die in the past week.
I have a spare 8600GT I could lend you if you wanted to grab it off of me. It'll run tf2, I dunno about anything more recent.

The 8800s apparently have a rather bad repuation for dying in the arse. Mine ran well past it's warranty period so I'm not too pissed about a shoddy product. I might take you up on that 8600 but I'll wait for Jame's opinion on the natter. He doesn't game much and he's got 9800 I think which is the same as the 8800s afaik. Then just get him some cheap card until I can replace mine.

That's cool, just shoot us a message on msn or something and we can organise something. It'd probably be easiest to pick it up on a Wednesday afternoon when I'm at the pub in the city.

I'm selling a few things on the Valhalla forums and my portable refrigerated air conditioner which is advertised on the IGA notice board here in town. Have a small heatwave going on here so hopefully someone will pick that up.
Replacement card is looking to be a Radeon 5770. Frag lost his 8800 the same way didn't he and got a 4870? The 4870 will be the backup if MSY doesn't have the HIS 5770 in stock.

Okay status update. New graphics card coming wednesday. At the moment I've got an old PCI S3 graphics card plugged in. With support for a whopping 16 colours it makes for an interesting experience.

Are you getting the 5770? It isn't clear what card you are getting. But that's good news that you can get it so quick.
Also I'm sure that things look sexy in 16 bit

I emailed MSY Elizabeth asking about stock levels. Hopefully they'll have the 5770 in stock. The cards are all the same but the HIS one comes with a coupon for Dirt 2 which is the first DX11 game I believe.

Yeah it did actually, he ended up with a 4870 yeah.

MSY at Elizabeth are all out of 5770s apparently. I'll be getting a 4890 instead.

Ahwell, I'm sure it's still an awesome card.

The 4890 is the better card performance wise, it just lacks new features like DX11 and the lower power consumption of the 5x series.

Nice. Also I didn't notice ads in my drivers.

During install you get bombarded with them.
